I’ve been troubled by this one ever since I first saw it. So much so that I avoided it. I hid from this question. It wasn’t that hard to do – unless I spoke up I didnt look any different from the other non-respondents. I don’t say that to judge anyone. I assume, in fact, that this question is so basic for most of the readers of BoM that you just never got back to answering it though you wholly meant to.
But like I said, I avoided responding to this question because I didn’t like my answer: which was, I had no answer. What are my core values? I don’t know. What’s maybe even worse (at least I’m pretty sure) is that I don’t even know where to start changing this sorry state of affairs. I think what prompted me to respond was thinking about guys I admire (Navy SEALs, for example) whom I believe live life this way. They’re the kind of guys who would throw themselves on a grenade for their buddies. And not that this is possible, but if they could get up from it – like if life cane with a replay button – they would do the same thing if they found themselves presented with the same circumstances.
Not a very impressive start. Anyone out there who can help me here?
I think there are two steps. First is observation. You can tell what you value by how you live. Dont do the whole “woe is me” sort of observing. Notice those ideals you’re passionate about. What Stokes that holy fire? What lines dare not be crossed? What high standards do you hold yourself too?
Then ask yourself, “is this what I want to be about?” Adapt what is to what you aspire to.

And then go get it.
